Stainless Steel Grades

Widely used stainless steel pipes and tubes grade are 202 and 304. Stainless steels are in the nickel and chromium contents. In India Best Quality Iron & Steels Manufacturer are Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Steel Authority of India Limited, Essar Steel, Bhushan Steel, Facor Steel, POSCO Steel, MESCO Steel, Jindal Stainless Steel

Grade 202

The toughness of stainless steel grade 202 at low temperatures is excellent. It is one of the most widely used precipitation hardening grades, and possesses good corrosion resistance, toughness, high harness, and strength. 202 has 16-18% chromium and 0.5-4.0% nickel. 304 is considerably stronger and more corrosion resistant than 202. SS 304 is better in quality and strength than SS 202 or SS 210. This is because of the high percentage of alloying elements like Nickle and Molybdenum in SS304 than SS202.

Grade 304

Grade 304 stainless steel is generally regarded as the most common austenitic stainless steel. It contains high nickel content that is typically between 8 and 10.5 percent by weight and a high amount of chromium at approximately 18 to 20 percent by weight. Other major alloying elements include manganese, silicon, and carbon. The remainder of the chemical composition is primarily iron.

Grade 304L

Grade 304L stainless steel has a slight, but noticeable, reduction in key mechanical performance characteristics compared to the “standard” grade 304 stainless steel alloy. These two alloys are remarkably similar—but there is one key difference. In grade 304 stainless, the maximum carbon content is set at 0.08%, whereas grade 304L stainless steel has a maximum carbon content of 0.03%. The “L” in 304L can be interpreted as meaning extra-low carbon.

Grade 304H

Grade 304H stainless steel alloy 304/304H (UNS S30400/ S30409) is a modification of the most widely utilized "18-8" chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel. The carbon content is controlled in the range of 0.04-0.10% for increased strength at temperatures above 800°F (427°C). It is an economical and versatile corrosion resistant alloy suitable for a wide range of general purpose applications.

Grade 316

Grade 316 stainless steel. Similar to 304, Grade 316 stainless steel has high amounts of chromium and nickel. 316 also contains silicon, manganese, and carbon, with the majority of the composition being iron. A major difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel is the chemical composition, with 316 containing a significant amount of molybdenum; typically 2 to 3 percent by weight vs only trace amounts found in 304. The higher molybdenum content results in grade 316 possessing increased corrosion resistance.

Grade 316L

Grade 316 stainless steel alloy 316/316L (UNS S31600/ S31603) is a chromium-nickel- molybdenum austenitic stainless steel developed to provide improved corrosion resistance to Alloy 304/304L in moderately corrosive environments. It is often utilized in process streams containing chlorides or halides. Type 316 steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that contains between two and 3% molybdenum. The molybdenum content increases corrosion resistance, improves resistance to pitting in chloride ion solutions, and increases strength at high temperatures.

Grade 316Ti

Grade 316Ti is referred to as the stabilized grade of the 316 types, and also one of the two 316 stainless steels that is recommended for higher temperature situations. This grade contains a small amount—typically only 0.5%—of titanium. While it still possesses many of the characteristics of other 316 grades, the addition of titanium allows 316Ti to be protected from precipitation at elevated temperatures, even with prolonged exposure. 316Ti also contains an addition of molybdenum in its composition. Like in other 316 grades, the molybdenum serves as increased protection against corrosion, pitting from chloride solutions and increased strength when placed in high temperature environments. However, its high temperature resistance is also compounded by its titanium content, which allows 316Ti to be immune to precipitation at these temperatures. Additionally, the metal shows resistance to acids, such as sulfuric acids, hydrochloric acids, and acid sulfates. 316Ti is commonly utilized in heat exchangers, paper mill equipment, and architectural components in marine environments.

Grade 317

Grade 317 317L is a molybdenum containing austenitic stainless steel, with improved corrosion resistance over 304/304L and 316/316L stainless steel. The increased levels of chromium, nickel and molybdenum over 316L stainless steel improve chloride pitting resistance and general corrosion. Through the controlled addition of nitrogen it is common for 317L to meet the mechanical properties of 317 straight grade, while maintaining a low carbon content. Grade 304, 316, and 317 stainless steel are all considered austenitic stainless steel alloys. These alloys all share some similar properties, such as high strength, corrosion resistance, and high concentrations of chromium and nickel. What separates 316 and 317 SS from 304 SS is that these higher-numbered alloys have added molybdenum in their formulation—grade 316 has about 2-3% molybdenum, and grade 317 has more than 3% molybdenum. This added molybdenum greatly improves the steel’s resistance to pitting from chlorides, which is why grade 316 SS is often used in the chemical processing and marine industries. However, this added molybdenum content also influences the cost of these two alloys. Grade 317 SS is generally more expensive than grade 316 SS. 316 SS, in turn, is more expensive than grade 304 SS. The exact extra cost varies based on the market at the time.

Grade 321

Grade 321 SS is a titanium stabilized austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel which was developed to provide an 18-8 type alloy with improved intergranular-corrosion resistance. This material is stabilized against chromium carbide formation by the addition of titanium. Since titanium has a stronger affinity for carbon than chromium, titanium carbide precipitates within the grains instead of forming at the grain boundaries. 321 stainless steel should be considered for applications requiring intermittent heating between 800ºF (427ºC) and 1650ºF (899ºC), or for welding under conditions which prevent a post-weld anneal. 321 stainless steel is non-magnetic. Grade 321 is a titanium stabilised chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel with good strength and excellent corrosion resistance, as supplied in the annealed condition with a typical brinell hardness of 175.Characterised by high corrosion resistance in general atmospheric corrosive environments it exhibits excellent resistance to most oxidizing agents, general foodstuffs, sterilizing solutions, dyestuffs, most organic chemicals plus a wide variety of inorganic chemicals, also hot petroleum gases, steam combustion gases, nitric acid, and to a lesser extent sulphuric acid. It displays good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion and has excellent weldability. 321 cannot be hardened by thermal treatment, but strength and hardness can be increased substantially by cold working, with subsequent reduction in ductility.

Grade 409

Grade 409 STAINLESS STEEL is especially useful for applications requiring oxidation or corrosion protection beyond the capability of carbon steel and some coated steels. Current uses include automotive and truck exhaust systems, tubular manifolds, agricultural spreaders, gas turbine exhaust silencers, heat exchangers and fuel filters. This alloy provides good oxidation and corrosion resistance for automotive and non-automotive exhaust applications. Grade 409 stainless steel is a Ferritic steel that offers good mechanical properties and high-temperature corrosion resistance. It is commonly considered as a chromium stainless steel, with applications in exhaust systems of automobiles and applications that demand weldability. Grade 409 steels are also available in highly stabilized forms, such as grades S40930, S40920 and S40910. The stability of these grades is provided by the presence of niobium, titanium, or both, in the composition of steels.

Grade 409L

Grade Grade 409L (UNS S40900, EN 1.4512) is a kind of stabile version of 409, composed with proper chromium, low composition of carbon and nitrogen and adjunction of titanium, all composition appropriate make Grade 409L have some properties, like corrosion resistance, weldability and formability. Due to the lower chromium, Grade 409L was another low cost option for corrosion resistant stainless steel. It has a good combination of heat resistance and corrosion resistance, can be ideal for non- or lightly corrosive environments or applications. It has excellent oxidation resistance in high temperatures and good welding performance, which can be used for automotive exhaust pipes or oil equipment. Grade 409L is titanium stabilized ferritic stainless steel containing about 11% chromium conforming to UNS S40910. The presence of chromium leads to the formation of a passive surface film which provides corrosion resistance. The addition of titanium prevents formation of harmful chromium carbides which can lead to inter granular corrosion in service. Titanium being a ferrite former also helps in avoiding hardening on cooling after welding. Furthermore, titanium also ties up with sulphur, leading to improved resistance to pitting corrosion. Atmospheric corrosion resistance of this grade is nearly 250 times that of mild steel. This grade is well suited for such mildly corrosive environments where good formability and weldability are required.

Grade 409Ni

Grade 409Ni is titanium stabilized ferritic stainless steel containing about 11% chromium with 0.75%Ni conforming to UNS S40975. Addition of Nickel provides high strength and toughness. The presence of chromium leads to the formation of a passive surface film which provides corrosion resistance. The addition of titanium prevents formation of harmful chromium carbides which can lead to inter granular corrosion in service. This grade is well suited for mildly corrosive environments where good formability and weldability are required.

Grade 410

Grade 410 stainless steels are general-purpose martensitic stainless steels containing 11.5% chromium, which provide good corrosion resistance properties. However, the corrosion resistance of grade 410 steels can be further enhanced by a series of processes such as hardening, tempering and polishing. Quenching and tempering can harden grade 410 steels. They are generally used for applications involving mild corrosion, heat resistance and high strength. Martensitic stainless steels are fabricated using techniques that require final heat treatment. These grades are less resistant to corrosion when compared to that of austenitic grades. Their operating temperatures are often affected by their loss of strength at high temperatures, due to over-tempering and loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures.

Grade 430Ti

Grade 430Ti/4520 has good corrosion resistance in solutions of many halogen-free organic and inorganic compounds over a wide temperature and concentration range. It can withstand many sufficiently diluted organic and mineral acids depending on the temperature and concentration of the solution. Moda 430Ti/4520 may suffer from uniform corrosion in strong organic and mineral acids, as well as in hot concentrated alkaline solutions. Grade 430 is non-hardenable steel that contains chromium and titanium, belonging to the ferritic family of steels. This type of steel is also known best due to its formability and good corrosion properties. However, if we talk about the sheets then buying AISI/SS 430Ti Sheet is the best option for you. This grade of stainless steel sheets is widely used in various applications and industries due to their exceptional features and properties. In aqueous solutions containing halogenides, e.g. chlorides or bromides, pitting and crevice corrosion may occur depending on the halogenide concentration, temperature, pH-value, concentration of oxidizing compounds, and crevice geometry, if applicable. For a short period of time, for instance during cooking of food in stainless steel dishes, Moda 430Ti/4520 can tolerate even relatively high chloride concentrations. The presence of corrosion-inhibiting or accelerating compounds like e.g. transition metal ions or organic compounds may influence the corrosion behavior of Moda 430Ti/4520. Due to its ferritic crystal structure, Moda 430Ti/4520 is not prone to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking.

Grade 439

Grade 439 is an 18% chromium, titanium stabilized ferritic stainless steel with corrosion resistance similar to that of 304/304L stainless steel. This grade may be used in the annealed, cold formed or as-welded condition in applications where other stainless steels such as Type 304/304L and Type 430 are used. Type 439 has good weldability due to titanium stabilization and has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Type 439 outperforms Type 409 in both oxidation and corrosion resistance and typical applications include tubular manifolds and exhaust system components.

Cutlery, Kitchenware Industry Pipes/Tubes

The most well known application stainless steels is probably for cutlery and kitchenware. The finest cutlery uses specially produced 410 and 420 for the knives and grade 304 (18/8 stainless, 18% chromium 8% nickel) for the spoons and forks. The different grades used such as 410/420 can be hardened and tempered so that the knife blades will take a sharp edge, whereas the more ductile 18/8 stainless is easier to work and therefore more suitable for objects that have to undergo numerous shaping, buffing and grinding processes.

Food Production Industry Pipes/Tubes

Large amounts of stainless steel are used in food production and storage. The most commonly used grades are 304 and 316. In general, 304 is basically the workhorse grade while 316 is used in harsher environments. An important reason fur using stainless steels is not so much the corrosiveness of the food itself as well as the fact that the use of stainless allows for faster and more efficient cleaning. For example in ice cream production 316 is specified so that strong anti-bacteriological cleaning and rinsing systems can be used. One of the great advantages of stainless steel is that it imparts no taste to the food that it comes into contact with.

Architecture, building and construction Industry Pipes/Tubes

Growing market as many modern buildings use stainless steels for cladding, roofing and facades. Another thing is that the low maintenance cost and anti-vandal characteristics of stainless provides a growing market in public transport, ticket machines and street furniture. Stainless steels are used for construction purposes, as well. When reinforced concrete first started to be used it was considered that the carbon steel used would not rust, as cement, obviously derived from limestone, is alkaline. However, constantly using grit salt on bridges can change the pH to acidic thereby rusting the steel which expands and cracks the concrete. Stainless steel reinforcing bar, although initially expensive, is proving to have very good life cycle costing characteristics.

Pipes & Tubes Difference

Pipe is a vessel. Piping is also a cylindrical length of hollow material – generally, piping is solely cylindrical and no other shape. Pipes are usually rigid and have no flexibility. Pipes are fitted using specialized fixtures such as tees and elbows. Tube is structural. Tubing is a cylindrical length of material that is usually hollow. Tubing can have a rectangular or square profile too. The term tube implies some degree of rigidity and also applies a level of permanence. They can be both rigid and flexible i.e. a tube used in structural construction may be rigid, whereas brass tubes are quite flexible.

Types & Applications

Stainless steel Pipe. Stainless steel pipes that are widely used for transferring liquids that are to be used in high temperature applications. These stainless steel pipes are made from seamless stainless steel and are used in heat transfer process equipment like boilers, super heaters, heat exchangers, condensers and others. Stainless Steel Pipes and Tubing is an integral part of the many systems. Piping and Tubing systems around the world involve connections which are provided by tube fittings. Steel tubing is consumed in bulk and provide for onward transmission of liquids and gases.
